why do scientist use models to study atoms

A model can allow a human to literally "see" the nucleus and electron cloud or to see the arrangement of atoms in a molecule that otherwise could not be observed. 

Drawings are two dimensional and do not have the same impact on the human mind that a 3-dimensional model has.
