what is an oath? how us it related to the naturalization process?

An oath is when you make a dignified promise that usually in relation to the person's behaviour or attitude to something and is usually made in a court as it the person making the oath needs to be witnessed. I can't answer the naturalisation process because I am in Australia and the History curriculum is different.
