Many languages, such as French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, are similar because they are derived from Latin. This dates back to the expansion of the Roman Empire over much of modern-day Europe. These areas spoke Latin, then over time transformed Latin into their own local versions for the peoples of France, Spain, Italy and elsewhere.
