Charlemagne (Charles the Great), Holy Roman Emperor, proposed
an alliance to the Byzantine Irene, the Pious Emperor, to take the Eastern
Roman Empire. Charlemagne knew that Irene would be soon overthrown, so she
proposed a marriage to which she consented. But, she was overthrown by
Nikephoros and her marriage was called off.
