DNA polymerase is the main enzyme that catalyzes the process of DNA replication. The synthesis of a new strand of DNA begins with the synthesis of an RNA primer complementary to a preexisting DNA strand. An old DNA is used as a template for the assembly of a new DNA strand. The first step of replication is catalyzed by the enzyme helicase which creates a replication forks and replication bubbles.
